LODI GARDEN

A WALK THROUGH LODHI GARDENS........
On 24th July 2011,we went to Lodi Garden for yet another Heritage Walk.It was organised by SRDC.As usual Dr.Jafa gave us lot of information about the Heritage, arrival of the Afghans and Lodi Garden. She classified heritage as Tangible and Intangible.Tangible is which can be touched like coins, etc.Intangible is which we cannot touch like dances, music etc.Long ago, there was Kherpur village in the Lodi Garden prermisis. Afghani tribes like Pathans, etc.were living there. They were not our enemies. They were migrating from west to east.Their god was Thanth. She also told us that Igakhan foundation is reconstructing Afghani Community. In evey tomb, there is a blue tile fitted .That blue glaze is very unique. In 1398,when Timur's soilder Sayyad came to thethrone he lacked money. That is why their monuments are small. She also gave information that Tombs are of two types-Octagonal and Square.Octagonal tomb for the graves of kings and square is for graves of nobles.A real grave is suppose to be simple. She also told that in every religion, the dead bodies are use to be burried except among the Hindus. But in Hindu community,a child below 14,a pregnant lady,a person who died due to snake bite or a saint is not cremated. In Lodi Garden, there is a Bada Gumbad and some other tombs. The Bada Gumbad is not a grave,it is a gate.It is square in shape. All the monuments of Lodi Garden is double walled.Inside it,there is a staircase to reach the domb.
The Garden was constructed by a Governor General as his wife Lady Willington wanted a landscape garden. In 1969,the government appointed two archetects in which one was J.A.Stain.He designed the the garden and it is a botany landscape heritage. And we come to know more about Lodi Dynesty,Afghans,Sayyad and Sikandar Lodi.
At the end was a wonderful Walk in terms of information and enjoyment. We saw a monument from a very different prespective this time. We are greatful to our teacher Coodinators-Ms. Seema Lal and Ms. Sunita Saini, who took us there and also to the SRDC who invited us.
