A HERITAGE WALK - Kashmere Gate
A news clip(picture) in the Hindu news paper..our school students ans Seema Lal mam clicking the picture,
On the WORLD HERITAGE DAY on wednesday our school children were taken on a Heritage walk . The walk was organised by the Delhi Government's Shahjanabad Redevelopment Corporation. The weather was very pleasant . We were introduced to Dr. Naveena Jafa-heritage consultant. In no time she engaged us in her conversation, told stories and wonderful facts. She told us various interesting facts and history of the Kashmere Gate . One of the main highlights of the Heritage walk was the ghost story that Dr. Jafa told us - It is rumoured that every night there a white woman is seen who sits with her hokkah and lures inside the gate any nice looking young man who is passing by. Dr.Naveena Jafa also told us about how the English women use to come here to looking for eligible husbands. A few blocks away was the old St.James Church, which was built by James Skinner, a man who fought many battles. He was the husband of 14 wives & had lot many children. He was once badly injured in one of the battles and he said if he would mange to survive then he would definetly build a church. And he was saved and the church was build. We aslo saw a building that now belongs to Guru Gobind Singh University. Dr.Jafa told us the story of the building that how it was changed several times. The last stop was the telegraph memorial dedicated to British soldiers who blew up an ammunition loaded magazine to guard themselves from an imminent attack during the 1857 uprising. We returned back with so many unknown stories associated with the Gate .The walk was a lovely experience . And we hope that in future also we will be taken again to such places which will add on to our knowledge.
